Period 9 Public Speaking

By Gabriel Fanshteyn and Joe Tesoriero

Ilya Avros - His presentation was on the importance of taking breaks. He starts off his presentation by connecting his topic towards how we as seniors were under a lot of stress this past year due to our college selection process. Ilya mentions the commonly recognized idea that working countless hours will make most people as productive as possible. He says that as we are forcing ourselves to take on a lot of work, we are being less productive. We are making us ourselves more exhausted by stressing ourselves out. He compares it to nurses and how nurses are also stressed on the daily but they can regulate it while students have trouble regulating that stress. Taking a break to drink a cup of water and to socialize can help relieve stress.

Joe Tesoriero -  His presentation was about the benefits of positive thinking. He starts by having us learn about negative thinking, especially how the pandemic has affected our minds negatively. It has brought lots of stress and anxiety because we aren't allowed to socialize with others as much as we would want. Negative emotions create stress that can decrease our lifespan. He teaches us that gratitude can lead to an increase in positive emotions and encourage positive feelings. He then goes into laughing and its purpose in positive thinking. Laughing increases lifespan, helps with immune response, and can actually burn calories. You can't just abandon negative emotions, but understand the importance of positive thinking and the effects it has on the mind and body.

Philip Gaston - Presentation was about "You are what you eat". He started by asking the class about what type of products would we buy, organic or processed. He tells us how the United States has a serious obesity issue. Phil makes it an important point to mention not being distracted by the front of a product, rather citing the true importance of reading the nutritional facts.

Everyone needs different amounts of fats, sugars, and calories. There are ways to log our data. Taking the necessary steps to eat healthy is important for a healthy lifestyle.

Ilya Galy - He discusses the benefits of exercise. Many teens don't go out to exercise and only play video games at home. He describes his own life and how his father and grandfather aren't active enough and are unable to do any physical movement for long periods of time. Some benefits he describes are that it helps prevent weight gain, boosts energy, improved mood, and can combat health conditions and diseases. Exercising can help ease depression and anxiety. It helps take your mind off any type of stress and worries and any negative thoughts that could come at any point.

Amber Li -  Her presentation is about the effects of technology and how it can be harmful. Technology can cause anxiety, depression, and body dis-morphia. Teens with a higher cell phone usage have said they felt lonelier than those with less cellphone use. Many of us care about how we are seen on the internet. She had the class do a PollEv to see how long before we go to sleep we put our phones down. The body needs to maintain their internal clock and being on the phone right before can ruin it. When screen time replaces family time, kids are less sympathetic and can "breathe trouble for the future." "How willing are you ready to make a change?"

Today's presentations focused on staying healthy and being in the right state of mind. Ilya Avros starts the day off with his presentation on the importance of taking breaks. I understood that during this pandemic, especially having to go through the college application process, my stress levels have reached dangerously high levels. Ilya spoke about the importance of relaxing and unwinding, socializing with people, and having the ability to regulate the stress to put less strain on the mind. Next, Joe Tesoriero went into showcasing the importance of having a positive mindset because it helps with a healthy mind and life. Phil Gaston made his presentation about his foods and how it is safer and healthier to choose the organic option for dishes. Ilya Galy focuses on the benefits of exercise and how many teens don't understand the benefits of exercises. Amber Li had made her presentation focused on technology and how it could affect sleep and family interactions. These presentations allow us to get rid of bad habits and learn to better take care of ourselves, mentally and physically.

The biggest theme connecting this day’s presentations would be how we should deal with the stress and anxiety that we face every time we wake up. Whether it be before a big test or a big presentation to the head of a company, people encounter stress every single day of their lives. Students presenting today made it a point to train ourselves on how to deal with these pressures. For instance, Ilya Avros explained how taking breaks from working can actually aid us in our productivity. Amber brought up how technology can interfere with our stress levels as screen time can affect sleep patterns and overall sleep quality. She then proceeded to mention how we can get out of the house and enjoy ourselves much more, instead of immediately turning to our devices every waking minute. I brought up the epidemic of negative thinking that surrounds a lot of us and how in order to counteract those thinking patterns, we must embrace positivity, be grateful for what we already have, and be more eager to laugh. Another theme of these presentations was the concept of self importance and treating yourself right. Phil Gaston talked on the importance of eating well and how many products will not highlight its nutritional facts. We can implement a more vigilant and alert attitude towards shopping for food. Ilya Galy talked on the importance of getting exercise, especially in a pandemic. We can implement this attitude by becoming more disciplined in working out more often and observing its easing effects on our minds. Overall, these presentations provided applicable solutions to problems concerning self importance and stress.
