March 23, 2021 - Public Speaking Period 9 By Amber Li and Vicky Chen Chapter 8 and 9 Presentations Chapter Eight The presentation on Chapter 8 focused on the different techniques for supporting one’s idea to present a stronger argument. Amber talked about the importance of having examples and showed that having more details will make an argument more effective by presenting two statements, one with a vague sentence and another with examples. She also differentiated between a brief, extended, and hypothetical example. Examples, through statistics, testimonies, or personal experiences, can be used to reinforce ideas. Using vivid examples and practicing delivery by making eye contact will help engage the audience. Ilya mentions the commonly recognized idea that working countless hours will make most people as productive as possible. He says that as we are forcing ourselves to take on a lot of work, we are being less productive. We are making us ourselves more exhausted by stressing ourselves out. He compares it to nurses and how nurses are also stressed on the daily but they can regulate it while students have trouble regulating that stress. Taking a break to drink a cup of water and to socialize can help relieve stress.   Joe Tesoriero -  His presentation was about the benefits of positive thinking. He starts by having us learn about negative thinking, especially how the pandemic

Meditation can improve mental, physical, and spiritual health. Throughout her presentation, she related facts and science about meditation to her own personal stories. She spoke about how her experiences with meditation helped her relieve stress, calm her nerves, and ease her mental state. When talking about the science of meditation, Alona showed a brain scan, comparing the amygdalae of two brains. The brain without meditation showed an aggravated amygdala, and the brain with meditation showed a much more calm amygdala. This showed that meditation is scientifically proven to be beneficial for us, since the amygdala is strongly associated with our fight-or-flight response. The science behind meditation was something completely unbeknownst to myself and many other classmates, further making the case that
